Crops

Four crops, tested by independent researchers

Wheat, barley, malt barley and hot pepper have each been tested with Eco Green in published field trials. This page shows what was tested, what was found, and what the researchers said about its limits.

Research rates are not application instructions.

The rates below are what the researchers tested on their plots, in their soils and seasons. How much to apply, when and how is set by the product label. For advice on your own crop, contact our team.

2 trials

Bread wheat

6,200 kg/ha at 40 L/ha as a seed treatment

6,200 kg/ha grain at 40 L/ha applied as a seed treatment

Where
Borena District, South Wollo (Amhara)
When
2023 main cropping season

What was tested

Five rates (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 L/ha) by three application methods — foliar spray, soil application and seed treatment — in a randomized block design with three replications.

What was found

  • Tallest plants 86.5 cm, longest spikes 9.2 cm, most kernels per spike 57.4
  • Biomass yield 9,990 kg/ha; straw yield 6,411 kg/ha
  • Seed treatment averaged 5,870.7 kg/ha, ahead of foliar and soil application

Eco Green improved bread wheat performance over the control

Where
Humbo and Boloso Sore, Wolaita zone
When
2023

What was tested

Eco Green and a second liquid product, Green Farm Plus, against an unfertilized control, with four replications.

What was found

  • Plant height, spike length, seeds per spike, thousand-seed weight and grain yield were measured

Limits, in the researchers’ words or ours

The author’s own conclusion favors Green Farm Plus, the other product tested.

Food barley

5.6 t/ha at 40 L/ha, returning 31 ETB per 1 ETB

5.6 t/ha grain with variety EH1493 at 40 L/ha

Where
Central highlands of Ethiopia
When
2022 rainy season

What was tested

Four rates (0, 20, 40, 60 L/ha) on three varieties (local, EH1493, HB-1307), factorial design, three replications.

What was found

  • Tallest plants 95.8 cm, 44.2 kernels per plant, harvest index 48.05%, thousand-grain weight 55.5 g
  • Net benefit 241,768 ETB/ha with a marginal rate of return of 3,127% — every 1 ETB invested returned 31.3 ETB

Limits, in the researchers’ words or ours

One location, one season. The authors call for more locations and seasons before firm conclusions.

Grain yield and every yield component rose significantly; best at 60 L/ha

Where
Sinana District, Bale Zone (Oromia) — Robe Area, Jafera and Sambitu
When
2018/19 growing season

What was tested

Six levels of Eco Green (0 to 5% diluted in water) at three locations.

What was found

  • Plant height, spike length, seeds per spike, tillers and biomass all increased with Eco Green

Limits, in the researchers’ words or ours

Higher rates (80 and 100 L/ha) gave no further significant gain — more was not better.

Malt barley

4,220 kg/ha against 1,592 kg/ha for the control

4,220 kg/ha at 80 L/ha, against 1,592 kg/ha for the control

Where
Sinana District, Bale highlands — Shalo, Robe Area and Sambitu, on farmers’ fields
When
Published 2022; Singitan variety (season not stated in the abstract)

What was tested

Six treatments — a water-only control and Eco Green at 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 L/ha — in a randomized block design with three replications.

What was found

  • Every Eco Green rate differed significantly from the control
  • Grain yield was most closely linked to the number of seeds per spike

1 trial

Hot pepper

18.19 t/ha green pods, with a 1,706% return

18.19 t/ha total green pod yield with 125 L/ha plus 59 kg N/ha

Where
Bahir Dar Zuria District, Amhara
When
2019/2020 growing season

What was tested

Four levels of nitrogen (0, 59, 82, 105 kg N/ha) combined with four levels of Eco Green (0, 75, 125, 175 L/ha), three replications.

What was found

  • Marketable yield 17.98 t/ha
  • Net benefit 318,517 ETB/ha with a marginal rate of return of 1,706%
  • The paper recommends this combination of Eco Green with 59 kg N/ha, not Eco Green on its own
